FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What the heck is BioThane?

BioThane® is the brand name of all coated webbing products made in the US by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp. It’s basically a polyester webbing with a PVC coating. It has a similar look and feel to leather, but it's vegan, even more durable, waterproof, and easy to clean.

Which BioThane width should I choose?

Both widths are extremely strong and durable (the 13 mm has a break strength of 226 kg, and the 19 mm has a break strength of 340 kg*) so it's really a matter of personal preference. But here are some tips:

For medium or large adult dogs: the most popular choice in the City Leash, Multi Leash, and Trail Leash is 19 mm. The Field Leash is available in 13 mm only, because 10 meters in 19 mm gets pretty heavy.

For small dogs or puppies: either width in the City Leash and Multi Leash will work well. For the Trail Leash and Field Leash, the lighter-weight 13 mm width is usually recommended.

NOTE: While BioThane is extremely strong, it will not withstand excessive chewing. If your dog is prone to chewing non-food items, be sure to keep the leash out of reach when they're not supervised, and redirect them if they begin chewing the leash during a walk (check out this video for a quick tip).

Which snap type is best for me?

→ Our stainless steel trigger snaps are extremely sturdy and resistant to corrosion. The breaking load is 500kg.*

→ Our solid brass trigger snaps are resistant to corrosion, but some tarnishing over time is natural. The breaking load is 130kg.*

→ Our chrome, rose gold, and black trigger snaps are Zinc die cast and finished with plating. Because of the nature of plating, some surface scratching due to general wear should be expected over time. The breaking load is 130kg.*

→ Our autolocking carabiners are made from lightweight aluminium and are finished with anodized silver or black coating. They're strong, resistant to corrosion, and lightweight, making them a fantastic choice for dogs of all sizes. The breaking load is 400 kg.*

Choosing your snap type:
In addition to your dog's weight, you should take into account your dog's on-leash behavior when choosing the best leash and snap type.

If your dog is medium or large and prone to strong pulling, lunging, chasing wildlife, etc. consider the stronger hardware options.

If your dog is over 50 kg and you are looking for an even more secure option than what we have available, we recommend looking for a leash manufacturer that offers leashes made with climbing-grade carabiners.
