FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT THE HECK IS BIOTHANE?
BioThane® is the brand name of all coated webbing products made in the US by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp. It’s basically a polyester webbing with a PVC coating. It has a similar look and feel to leather, but it's vegan, even more durable, waterproof, and easy to clean.
WHICH BIOTHANE WIDTH SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Both widths are extremely strong and durable, so it's really a matter of personal preference. But here are some tips:
For medium or large adult dogs: the most popular choice in The City Leash, The Multi Leash, and The Trail Leash is 19 mm. For The Field Line, 13 mm is recommended, unless you have a very large dog.
For small dogs or puppies: the most popular choice in The City Leash and Multi Leash is 19 mm. For The Trail Leash and The Field Line, the lighter-weight 13 mm width is usually recommended.
While Biothane is extremely strong, it may not withstand excessive chewing. If your dog is prone to chewing non-food items, be sure to keep the leash out of reach when they're not supervised, and redirect them if they begin chewing the leash during a walk (check out this video for a quick tip).
WHICH SNAP TYPE SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Trigger Snaps are either made from Zinc die casting and finished with Chrome, Rose Gold, or Matte Black plating OR they are available solid Brass. The breaking load is 130 kg, and they are recommended for dogs under 25 kg. Because of the nature of plating, some surface scratching on the Rose Gold and Matte Black due to general wear should be expected over time. Solid brass is more resistant to corrosion, but other types of weathering is natural.
Autolocking Carabiners are made from lightweight Aluminium and are finished with Anodized Silver or Black coating. The breaking load is 400 kg, and they are recommended for dogs under 50 kg. Carabiners are strong, resistant to corrosion, and lightweight, making them a great choice for small, medium, and large dogs alike. Check out a video here to see how the autolocking element functions.
In addition to your dog's weight, you should take into account your dog's on-leash behavior when choosing the best leash and snap type.
If your dog is over the recommended weight of a snap type and generally has calm leash behavior, the snap type may still be suitable.
If your dog is over the recommended weight of a snap type and is prone to extreme pulling, lunging, chasing wildlife, etc. you should consider a more secure option. If your dog is over 50 kg and you are looking for a more secure option than the Autolocking Carabiner, we recommend looking elsewhere for leashes made with climbing-grade carabiners.
